A DOMAIN NO ONE GETS. If the domain you want has one of the most commonly misspelled words in it, or a common variation-- you're just asking for trouble! Either you'll have to change your mind or you'll have to also buy every spelling variation (We own ManchesterBlvd.com, ManchesterBoulevard.com, and ManchesterBolevard.com)
A COLOR SCHEME THAT OFFENDS. Colors mean things to people and more often, they speak louder than pictures or words.
DEAD ENDS. No one likes to end up at a dead page. Even a "Coming Soon" page is better than that.

I'll bet you're wondering why you're wasting your time reading a tutorial (written by a web designer) on finding a great designer. I'm sure you think there's some sort of trick here, but there really isn't. Even though I can build a website in a day, I don't necessarily have one day to dillydally with my own projects.
